Using character's was to me, always the basic idea, to watch writing on subway cars. I always thought of this as an eye catcher, and an important part for writers, to make sure to stand out.
Another respectful aspect to me is, the joy in bystanders eyes, as the character's shows the playfullness of graffiti writing. Graffiti to me is surpose to be a maximum of play.
